چکیده

Performance, carcass and meat quality were assessed in 3 groups of Brown Swiss male calves, all of them suckled by their dams: groups M200 and M250 were exclusively milk-fed and slaughtered at 200 or 250 kg, respectively, and G400 group was supplemented with grain and slaughtered at 400 kg after a short finishing period. Increasing weight in milk-fed animals led to an increase in dressing percentage and conformation score, and a decrease in muscle content with an increase in dissectible fat in the rib, with no repercussions on meat quality. G400 group showed higher values in compactness index, percentage of high-priced cuts and dissectible fat content than the lighter milk-fed groups. Regarding meat quality, the only remarkable difference in grain-fed animals was a higher a* index, with no detectable differences in sensory traits.

Feeding of Safflower (Carthamus tintorius) Cake in Small Ruminant Total Mixed Rations: Effects on Growth Traits and Meat Fatty Acid Composition

Little scientific information is available that has evaluated safflower (Carthamus tinctorius) cake as a substitute to conventional ingredients in small ruminants diet. The objective of this work was to evaluate the effect of feeding safflower cake in total mixed rations (TMRs) on lamb and kid growth rates, carcass traits and meat fatty acid composition. Two consecutive trials were conducted us...

Growth Performance and Carcass Quality of Layer Type Cockerels and Broiler Chicken

The aim of the study was to compare the growth performance and carcass quality of layer-type cockerels and broilers reared under identical conditions. A total of 180 one-day-old broiler male (BM), broiler female (BF) and brown layer male (LM) chicks were distributed into 9 floor pens in a completely randomized design, with 3 replicates of 20 birds per experimental unit. The body weights and fee...

Carcass Traits and the Quality of Meat from Cattle Finished on Diets Containing Barley

Research on barley as an animal feed started some decades ago but its utilization in animal production has been limited to countries that grow the crop extensively. Corn has been the most popular energy feed in cattle rations, but the high price of corn and the decreased supply of the grain in the international market have shifted the focus of the animal industry to other cereal crops like barl...

The performance and meat quality of Bonsmara steers raised in a feedlot, on conventional pastures or on organic pastures

The effects of production system (feeding regime and time on feed) on growth performance, yield and economics and the effects of feeding regime, pre-slaughter treatment and electrical stimulation on meat quality were evaluated. Sixty Bonsmara steers were divided into three treatment groups, viz. feedlot, organic pasture and conventional pasture feeding. The feedlot and conventional pasture grou...
